How to host a Derby party people talk about all year

Timing, food, hats and a few small touches that make a Kentucky Derby party feel special, without turning it into a second job.

The Kentucky Derby is famously "the most exciting two minutes in sports," which leaves a lot of afternoon to fill. Most of the planning goes into the hours around the race.

Start later than you think

Post time is in the early evening, Eastern time. Inviting people for mid-afternoon gives everyone a few hours to arrive, eat and settle in without peaking too early. Put the start time and the post time on the invitation so nobody misses the race.

Make the hats the main event

Hats are the easiest way to make a Derby party feel like a Derby party. Ask guests to wear one, and keep a few spares by the door for anyone who forgot. A simple "best hat" vote, announced right before post time, gives the afternoon a natural high point.

Keep the food easy to eat standing up

Most guests will be mingling, not sitting. Think small plates: biscuits with ham, pimento cheese, a big bowl of something that holds up at room temperature, and bourbon-ball-style desserts. Save anything that needs a knife and fork for a sit-down event.

Get the room watching at post time

  • A low-stakes pool where everyone draws a horse from a hat.
  • The field printed on a card at each table, so guests can follow along.
  • The TV volume turned up for the walk to the post and the race itself, then back down.

Plan for the photos

People put real effort into Derby outfits, and they'll want proof. Pick one spot with decent light and a plain wall, and make sure someone takes a picture of every guest in their hat before the race. After the race, half the hats come off.

Derby weekend is one of the busiest of the spring in Lexington, for rentals and caterers alike. Book anything you need by March.
